SAN FRANSISCO The Techonomy conference was brought to a close with Bill Gates answering questions from members of the audience.

To the question whether he thought that online education could potentially supersede in-person education, Gates said college education “increasingly hard to get” and says that “place-based” traditional college studies will be “five times less important than it is today.”

He explained, “The self-motivated learner will be on the web. And there will be far less place-based [college] things…College….except for the parties…needs to be less place based…..the two hundred thousand dollar education that it is increasingly hard to get because there is less money for it…..because it is not there…and we are trying to provide it to every kid who wants it……and only technology could bring that down not just to twenty thousand, but to two thousand…..so, yes place based activity in that college thing would be five times less important than it is today”
